TL 62 SE STEBBING THE DOWNS 4/442 Stebbing Park 7.2.52 GV II*
House mid C16 with later additions and alterations. L shape timber framed and plastered. Stair turret to right return with crownpost roof and barge boards to gable. Single storey extension to left front. Red plain tiled roofs with moulded and dentilled eaves cornice. 4 window range of C18 small paned sliding sashes to first floor 1:2 range to ground floor - the furthest right of 3 lights. The 6 panel door with ornate fan light above moulded pilasters, dentilled capitals and frieze and flat canopy is approached by steps. There is a C20 door to left extension. The rear wing is jettied, and has a C17 iron leaded bay window with original shutters and original ironmongery on the ground floor. Side purlin structure to main range roof. C17 internal panelling and C16 external red brick chimney stack to front and rear ranges. The house is in a very picturesque parkland setting adjoining a moated motte. In the grounds are remnants of a C13 barn incorporated into a C20 swimming pool building and there is a fine C19/20 greenhouse with hipped roof and ornate cast iron crested ridge and finials, and 7 ornate cast iron side brackets (3 at the rear) and 5 matching apex ties. Windows with small paned upper glazing panels. RCHM 7.
