14/37 The Bampton Studio, Nos 2 and 4 and - No 7, Silver Street

GV II

Large house, subdivided into shop and flats and adjoining house in Silver Street. Circa mid/late C18 with early C19 doorcases to Castle Street and a circa 1860s shop window. Stone rubble with slate roof, hipped at ends ; end stacks and axial stack. No. 7 Silver Street is whitewashed and rendered with a slate roof, gabled at ends and end stacks. Plan: L plan with one range along Castle Street and an adjoining range at right angles to the right end in Silver Street. The main range appears to have been originally symmetrical although the position of the entrance is not clear; the original entrance may have been at the centre but the 2 doorcases to the right seem to be early C19 and the large shop window to the left is a later C19 insertion. Exterior: 3 storeys to Castle Street range, 2 storey to Silver Street. The Castle Street range has a grand 7-bay front elevation with left and right pilasters, pilasters flanking the central bay and 2 string courses. The symmetry of the ground floor has been altered by the addition of a pair of circa early C19 front doors with good doorcases with reeded pilasters and cornices in the first and second bays from the right. The 3 left hand bays on the ground floor are now filled with a late C19 shop window with pilasters, a cornice and a dentil frieze. 12-pane sashes to centre and right hand bays on the ground floor ; similar sashes to the first floor except the left hand window which is a 4-pane replacement and the centre window which is a 2-light casement with glazing bars and margin glazing. 7 second floor 6 over 3- pane sashes. Interior: not inspected but said to have good staircase. Silver Street Range. 2 storeys. 3-bay front with a C19 central panelled door with pilasters, a cornice and a painted rectangular fanlight. 3-light C20 casements to left and right with segmental arches to the embrasurers. On the first floor a round- headed sash with margin glazing above the front door; 12-pane sashes to left and right.
