Stoverlake Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. C17, modified and C20 wing. Rendered or painted rubble, Spanish
slate roof. A former 3-room cross-passage plan with stair flanking fireplace; a
gabled wing added to back now forming T-plan. Set gable to road, a 2-storey,
3-window front to south with 2-light glazing bar casements in deep reveals, and
door under pent slate roof between windows 2 and 3 at cross-passage. Left end
has large lean-to. Gable stacks. Back wing not of special interest. Interior:
narrow cross-passage with thin partition each side and stone floor. Left room
has good bressummer fire and bread oven, wood spiral stair includes a blocked
window opening; chamfered and stopped ceiling joists and large transverse beam.
A second stair at back. Many thin plank doors, that under stair with early
hinges. A-frame roof; the gable to road shows that roof has been raised at some
stage. Although much restored, with C20 windows, the fabric still retains much
of historic interest.
