GV II*

House and bank, now offices and public library. 1881 with C20 shopfront. Red
sandstone ashlar ground floor with patterned tile- hanging on upper storeys,
steeply pitched slate roof. Norman Shaw style. 3-storeys and attic, 2:3 bays and
slightly curved facade. 8-light mullioned and transomed windows on ground floor
with C20 shopfront, mixed fenestration above of wooden oriels jettied out on
carved grotesque corbels with hipped roofs and carved panels of decoration;
wooden mullioned casement windows with and without carved panels of decoration
below. These panels depict stylised fruit, human figures and mythical animals in
the style of the Norwegian stave church carvings. Gabled dormer windows,
lighting only the roof space. Two centred arch and double wooden door on ground
floor right-hand bay, originally the entrance to the bank. Interior: wooden
stair hall with queenpost roof and curved windbraces, galleries on each floor.
Access to the bedrooms and servants quarters of the house now blocked.
