II

Farmhouse. Dated 1682 (on staircase), partly remodelled mid-and late
C18, extended late C19 or early C20. Red brick (narrow bricks to C17
part); slate and machine tile roofs. Original house probably a T-plan with
gabled staircase projection to rear lengthened and widened to left in mid-C18.
Front wall largely rebuilt in late C18 and extended to left in late C19 or
early C20. Two storeys and attic. 3-window front, slightly unevenly spaced
and stepped horned 6-paned sashes with segmental heads. Central entrance;
segmental-headed 6-panel door (middle panels now glazed) under C20 gabled
timber porch. Integral end stack to right and another to left at junction
between late C18 part and C20 addition. Leaded latticed fixed-light
window in infilled pointed doorway to back wall and similar window to left
side of rear range lighting staircase.

INTERIOR. Main feature of interest
is dog-leg staircase- rising from ground floor to attic: carved panel on
first half-landing has superscription E 16 . Twisted balusters to open
string, moulded handrail and newels KM 82
with carved finials and pendants. Turns in two directions to second half-
landing. Chamfered ceiling beams to both ranges on ground floor and to
main range on first floor. Door on first floor has reused C17 rectangular
oak panelling. Queen-strut roof in three bays to main range and in one wide
bay to rear range. The staircase is a fine dated example of a type usually
found somewhat earlier. Late C19 brick lean-to attached to rear of rear
range is not of special architectural interest.
