HIGH BICKINGTON SHUTELEY SS 51 NE 8/111 Shuteley Cottage - II
House. Probably mid to late C17, with probably late C19 addition. Rendered cob, with gable-ended C20 asbestos-slate roof (probably formerly thatched). Stone end stacks. Rendered addition (probably over stone rubble) with gable-ended Welsh-slate roof. Plan and development: Two-room plan with external end stacks (ground falls to right). Larger principal room to left with probably early to mid C19 staircase in rear right- hand corner (earlier stair possibly in different location). Right-hand stack is possibly a later (late C17 or early C18) addition. It is possible that the right- hand end room is also a later addition. Probably late C19 lean-to outshut at rear of left-hand end and late C19 addition to left (present kitchen). Two storeys with one- storey addition. Exterior: Asymmetrical front. Four windows to first-floor and 3 to ground floor; mostly late C19 two-light wooden casements (2 right-hand ground-floor windows with 3- light casements). Doorway to left has lateC20 flat-roofed porch with half-glazed door. One storey addition to left has small 2-light wooden casement to front. Left- hand gable end of main range has bread oven at base of stack with pantile lean-to roof and small first-floor window to left of stack with small diamond-section wooden or metal mullion (possibly lighting former stairs). Raking buttress at rear of left- hand end room. Interior: Ground-floor rooms have C17 chamfered cross beams. C17 open fireplace in left-hand room with stone jambs, C17 cambered chamfered wooden lintel with stepped stops, and bread oven. Window seat to front. Probably early to mid C19 wooden staircase to right-hand rear corner of left-hand room with winders at top, matchboarded sides, boarded door at foot, boarded door to cupboard under stairs with strap hinges, and stick balusters to landing balustrade. C19 door between ground- floor rooms and old cream hob in cross wall. Late C17 open fireplace in right-hand ground-floor room with stone jambs and chamfered wooden lintel with stepped notched stops.
