SX 68 NE CHAGFORD

3/16 Butterwell approximately 100 - metres south-east of Collihole Farmhouse II -

Butterwell built into a walled bank over a natural spring. Built of blocks of roughly dressed granite. The bank faces north-east and is revetted with granite and contians a square-shaped alcove approximately 1.5 metres high roofed with a slab of granite. There is a low slab set upright across the front. There is no trace of any shelves inside. This butterwell forms part of an attractive group of listed buildings in a hamlet which contains 2 listed former Dartmoor longhouses, Collihole Farmhouse (q.v.) and Collihole Cottage (q.v.).
