Gateway and
flanking walls

II
Entrance portal and flanking walls. 1842-3. Ashlar and roughly dressed stone
respectively. Portal with large segmental-arched carriage entrance flanked by small
pedestrian entrances. Cast-iron gates. "Ladysmith Barracks" inscribed as voussoirs
(apparently in c1920) below plain band and pediment. Similar band and pediment
above pedestrian entrances in a plain classical manner. Flanking walls 30 metres
on either side approximately 5 metres in height.
