ASHREIGNEY
Horridge Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. Early to mid C17 possibly with earlier origins. C18 and C19 additions.
Rendered cob walls. Asbestos slate roof gabled to right, hipped to left. 3 brick
stacks, one axial and one at each gable end.
Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan, but it is unclear where the original passage
was as the one between the centre and right-hand room is probably an insertion and
the hall stack is at the opposite end to it. There are 2 stair projections at the
rear - one behind the left-hand room and one behind the central room. The 2 rear
outshuts are C18 to C19.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window front with shallow hall projection to
left of centre. 1st floor windows are C19 3- and 4-light small-paned casements with
C20 1-, 3- and 4-light casements on the ground floor. C20 part-glazed door to right
of centre. Rear elevation has 2 outshuts, earlier one probably to left.
Interior: hall has open fireplace with chamfered wooden lintel which has run-out
stops. Chamfered cross beam with ogee stops and similar beam to inner room. Winder
stairs in projection at rear of hall. The other staircase is blocked. Roof trusses
are probably C19 and consist of straight principals resting on the wall-plate.
