Details
NEWTON ST CYRES LANGFORD ROAD SX 99 NW 6/20 New Bridge - - II Road bridge over railway and river. 1844-51. Built for Exeter and Crediton Railway, Volcanic trap and engineering brick (both red and black), granite coping. Embankments carrying Langford Road have battered abutments of black brick with square red panels. 3-span bridge with segmental arches. Both piers on 3-legs with sturdy bases of mixed dressed stone and black brick. Black-brick legs separated by transverse round-headed arches. Main arches of red brick with volcanic rubble above. The piers have pronounced batter and are carried up past the drip course at road level to the parapet. Parapet of volcanic stone with internal recessed panels enlivened by squares of black brick. Granite coping is weathered slightly to outside rising slightly to cap the piers. (R A Williams, The London and South Western Railway, 1968, p107).
