7/227 The Red Seat
GV II
Summer house, called the Red Seat or Kiosk. Circa 1836. Sandstone rubble. Single
storey summer house with front viewing room and shallow rear room; roofless.
Rectangular plan, about 4 metres by 1½ metres overall, with open front and sides.
Front has arcade of 3 round arches with elliptical headed arch to left and right
sides, 2 rectangular piers dividing front arches, front wall swept down to right and
left. Granite seat along rear wall. Small room to rear.
The Red Seat is one of the features of the Upper Zigzags, a system of formal paths
terraced into the hillside and cliffs along the coast, approximately south/south east
of Mount Edgcumbe House (q.v.). The Upper Zigzags are described in 1836, although
they are shown on the map of 1756 (BM Plymouth 11 77).
