EAST AND WEST BUCKLAND SS 63 SW 2/59 Furze Farmhouse - II
Farmhouse. C17 fabric and plan but evidence of a fire and internal alterations suggests the house was virtually rebuilt in C19. Whitewashed rendered stone and cob. Bitumenized slate roof with gable ends. Stack at left gable end with slate capping and brick shaft, and tall front lateral hall stack with offsets, heightened in brick. 3 room and cross-passage plan, the cross-passage containing staircase to rear. Heated lower end to left, C20 inserted fireplace to inner-room. 2 storeys. 4 window range. Upper storey principally C19 fenestration of variously paned 2-light casements and 3-light casement at left end. Ground floor C20 fenestration, 3-light window to left of porch with slate roof continued to the right as a sill to the lateral stack. Plank door. Interior C19 interior joinery largely intact. Chamfered axial beam to inner room, but no other original beams exposed. 5 probably C19 roughly pegged trusses of wider span than usual, suggesting the rear wall was built out after the fire to increase the width of the rooms.
