Details

PATRINGTON WELWICK ROAD TA 3022-3122 (west side) 15/57 Ruston House GV II House. 1810-20 with C18 section to rear. For Robert Clifford, surgeon. Front of grey brick in Flemish bond with Welsh slate roof; earlier section in red brick with yellow brick dressings, Welsh slate and pantile roof. L- shaped on plan: double depth, with 2-room central entrance-hall south front and earlier 3-room section to rear with 2 coach-houses to rear right. 2 storeys, 3 bays; symmetrical. Stucco plinth. Stone step with moulded nosing to elegant projecting Doric porch with tapered octagonal columns with moulded capitals carrying entablature with triglyphs hung with guttae and modillioned cornice; narrow reeded pilasters flanking wide round-arched opening containing recessed half-glazed fielded-panel door in reeded architrave with roundel ornament, side lights above reeded sills and panels, and large 2-pane fanlight. Full-height bows to each side have unequal 15-pane sashes in reveals with sills and channelled stucco flat arches. First-floor sill band, 12-pane first-floor sashes in similar surrounds to bows and central bay. Projecting wooden gutter on paired brackets with roundel ornament. Hipped roof. Side wall stacks. Right return, rear section: 2 storeys, 3 bays with central bay breaking forward. 15-pane ground-floor sash to left beneath segmental arch in blocked former opening. Segmental-arched carriage entrances to centre and right bays, the former with pair of board doors. 2 first floor single-course yellow brick bands, cut by 12-pane sash to left beneath cambered arch, with single yellow brick rectangular panels to centre and right bays beneath stone coped parapet. Interior: open well staircase with wreathed handrail, scrolled brackets, column newel and balusters; moulded ceiling roundel to entrance hall; moulded cornice and frieze, grey marble chimney-piece with pilasters and consoles to ground floor right; reeded cornice and white marble chimney- piece with keyed round arch to ground floor left; 6-beaded-panel doors in reeded architraves with lion's head decoration to hall and main front rooms; ovolo-moulded ceiling beams to earlier rear section. The earlier rear section may represent part of the house of Robert Ruston, d1783. Victoria County History: York, East Riding, vol 5, 1984, p 100.
