House, now used partly as nursing home, garden walls to right and garden walls and
railings to front. Circa late C16, on earlier site. Stone rubble. Rag slate roof
with hipped end to right and gable end to front left. Brick shafts to stone rubble
axial, end and lateral stacks.
Plan: Complicated plan with C17, C18, C19 and C20 extensions, remodelling and
alterations and the original arrangement and size of the house is uncertain. The
existing house is of overall 'L' shaped plan and appears to have been divided into 2
houses during the C19 and C20. The nursing home now occupies the main range and
private accommodation and several unused rooms are in the front left hand wing.
It is possible that the house originally comprised the main range which was probably
of at least 3-room plan; the lower end to right possibly heated by an axial stack
backing onto the passage; the hall heated by a rear lateral stack and the inner room
by an end stack on left. The house was then probably extended in the late C16 or
early C17 when a room was built on the higher side of the inner room and extended
again in circa early to mid C17 on the front left with a wing of two room and cross
passage plan. C17, C18 and C19 service outshots to rear of main range and left hand
side of front wing. In circa C18 the plan of the house was altered, the main range
hall fireplace blocked and a fireplace inserted in the back of the lateral stack to
heat a service outshut to rear; the passage and entrance was altered and the
fireplace to the inner room reversed to heat the hall and the hall was divided into
two rooms.
There are several straight joints and several pieces of early joinery have been reset
including a piece of multiple moulded probably C16 beam reset as a lintel in an
outshut and another piece inserted as a support for a roof truss. A bolection
moulded chimney-piece, remains of early C18 moulded plaster cornice and several C18
raised and fielded panelled doors indicate late C17 and C18 alterations.
Exterior: 2 storeys with a regular 3:3 window front. Main range has a C20 panelled
door flanked by C20 sashes with two C20 16-pane sashes and central 12-pane sash
above. Front wing to left has C19 sashes with C18 panelled door near centre, 16-pane
sash in partly blocked wide opening with slate string to left and 16-pane sash to
right. Three 16-pane sashes on first floor.
Stone rubble and cob garden wall projects from the right-hand side of front wall of
main range and a low stone rubble wall with granite coping and gate-piers and C19
iron railings, encloses the fourth side of the courtyard to the front of the house.
Interior: Main range; right hand room remodelled in C20. To left, the hall was
probably divided in the early C18 and has the remains of an early C18 moulded plaster
cornice. First floor of main range remodelled in C20 for nursing home.
The front wing to left remains unaltered although the service outshuts to rear are
partly derelict. Remains of probably C18 timber lintel to fireplace heating front
room and the chamber above is heated by an axial stack with a bolection-moulded
chimney-piece. The room which was probably added on the higher end of the main range
has a plaster ceiling with what appear to be heavy chamfered C17 floor joists and a
large fireplace with probably C17 lintel. C17 outshut on left hand side of front
room of wing has heavy chamfered C17 floor joists and the remains of a probably C17
fireplace.
Roof structure: Not fully accessible. A fire in the front left hand wing has
blackened and charred part of the roof structure including the C19 and C20 common
rafters as well as the earlier purlins and the principals. However, there appears
to- be at least three C17 trusses with morticed and halved, lap-jointed and pegged
apices and dovetailed, notched lap-jointed and pegged collars.
The visible features of The Barton indicate a house of some importance and it is
possible that other features survive, covered by late alterations and remodelling and
therefore care should be taken in any future alterations.
