Details
ST CLEER SOUTH CARADON MINE SX 26 NE 11/89 Railway bridge of the Liskeard and - Caradon Railway, at SX 264 696 II Railway bridge. Between 1843 and 1846. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Tall round arch with rusticated voussoirs, parapet walls with coping. Flanking walls slightly splayed and ramped down at each side of the arch front and rear. The Act for the Liskeard and Caradon Railway was passed in 1843, to carry coal and ore for the South Caradon Mine, which struck copper in 1837. The line was built to standard gauge, eight and a quarter miles long, and had a ruling gradient of 1 in 60, with the intention of gravity working in the downward direction. The line was first worked by horses, but by 1862 the output and requirements had grown to such an extent that the Liskeard and Caradon Railway Company decided to re-lay the line and introduce locomotive haulage. By this time the railway extended direct to the copper shipping wharves at Looe. Sources: Barton, D.B.: A Historical Survey of the Mines and Mineral Railways of East Cornwall and South Devon 1964.
