Details
SW 72 SE ST. ANTHONY -IN-MENEAGE 5/187 Boden Vean Farmhouse, adjoining - farm buildings and gate piers
GV II
Farmhouse, adjoining farm buildings and gate piers. Possibly of C17 origin but remodelled in the C18 and extended in the early-mid C19. Slate hanging over studwork to west front, otherwise mainly painted rubble and cob walls. Scantle slate roofs, hipped with brick chimney over each side wall to front gable end and rear wing adjoining hip-ended barn and shippon at right angles. Axial brick chimney over rear wing and cast iron ogee gutters. Probably a 3 room through passage plan originally with barn adjoining the lower end (east); house extended with 2 storey rear outshut circa late C18 or early C19. This range now survives as a service wing at right angles to rear left of a circa early mid C19 2 room house added to the higher end (west). In the circa mid C19 a shippon was added at right angles to the lower end of the original house, left (north). Two storeys. Symmetrical 3 window slate-hung west front with central doorway. Original 6-panel door with flush beaded bottom panels. Original hornless sashes with glazing bars and marginal panes, sash boxes flush with wall and with moulded architraves. (These windows are similar in design to Mudgeon Cottage qv. and Boskenna qv. in St. Martin parish). The rear wing has north front of the original house with irregularly disposed openings, 12-pane sashes and casements, the right hand window opening is wider and has lattice ventilator and horizontal sliding shutter to 2 of its 3 lights. Ledged door towards left. The barn has good cob texture, roof heightened circa early C19. Oak lintels to original openings and external flight of stone steps at lower end of rear wall. A probably C17 pair of granite gate posts each with 5 sockets for removable bars adjoin the north east corner of the barn. The shippon is of unpainted rubble with granite dressings. Interior of house only partly inspected but sufficient to see that there have been few alterations since the C19, and there are also some C18 features. This farmhouse and its adjoining buildings form one of the least altered groups since the C19 in this parish, and the barn may well be as old as the house. The gate piers are a particularly rare survival.
