Details

CROXDALE AND HETT MAIN STREET NZ 2737 (South side) Sunder land Bridge 17/69 Gazebo, gate piers and garden walls to east and south of The Hermitage GV II Gazebo, gate piers and garden walls. Mid-late C18. Coursed rubble gazebo and walls. Dressed sandstone piers. Walls enclosing north, east and south sides of garden with pair of gate piers adjoining house at north-west and gazebo at north-east corner. Tall square-plan piers with chamfered rustication and corniced caps. Square-plan, 2-storey gazebo with dressed quoins, south doorway, C20 window on east and rebuilt embattled parapet concealing roof. 20-metre long, 1.5-metre tall north wall links piers to gazebo. 55-metre long, 2.0 to 3.0-metre. tall east, retaining wall has quadrant ramped-up section to south. 30-metre long, 2.0-metre tall south wall has quadrant ramp near south-east corner. Included for group value. Fragmentary north wall and linked outbuilding near house are not of special interest.
