URPETH BEAMISH OPEN-AIR MUSEUM NZ 25 SW 218549 3/59 Bandstand in town area, opposite Ravensworth Terrace II

Bandstand. Late C19; moved from Saltwell Park, Gateshead and rebuilt at Beamish Museum in 1978. Light-red engineering brick and stone base; cast-iron and wood superstructure. Octagonal plan.

Low base has 3 courses of Flemish-bond brickwork and chamfered stone coping. 8 thin columns with Roman Ionic capitals. Low railings between columns; each section in 3 panels: central panel with bird, butterfly and floral motifs; flanking panels with wavy bars. Columns support posts with scrolled brackets and stylised lyres. Low-pitched hipped roof, with overhanging eaves, is crowned by open cupola with scrollwork and ornamental finial.
