SK 16 SE PARISH OF HARTINGTON NETHER QUARTER BUXTON ROAD 8/91 (West Side) 10.8.1951 Newhaven House Hotel GV II

Hotel, now partly converted into flats. Mid C18 and c1795 for the Duke of Devonshire. Rendered stone, painted stone dressings and rusticated quoins. Stone gable end, ridge and side wall stacks, all with plain decorative bands. Slate roofs, except plain tile porch roof. Front roof hipped, rear roofs with stone coped gables. Shallow plinth. Three storeys, higher to street front, stepping down lower to rear. Five bay eastern street front, eight bay south elevation. East elevation of c1795. Central porch with broken dentilled pediment over glazing bar sash in plain surround. Doric columned porticos to either side. Pairs of similar sashes, tied by sill band, either side. Plain sill band over linking five similar sashes. Above, to eaves, five similar, but shallower, sashes. South elevation - three sided canted, full height, bay to east with glazing bar sash to each face, tied by sill band. Similar band and sashes above. Three further sashes over. To west, lower three bay, mid C18, section with central glazed door in plain surround. Plain sash to either side, in painted flush surround. Three similar windows over with three further, shallower, ones to eaves. Beyond to west, lower three storey, two bay addition in similar style. Interior - c1795 cantilevered stone staircase through three storeys. Oval room with dentilled cornice, raised and fielded panelled shutters. Contemporary fireplace with wood surround decorated with classical motifs and inset Monyash marble sides.
