Details

SP 9632-9732 WOBURN WOBURN PARK 3/181 23.1.61 Ice House approximately 500 m SSE of Basin Bridge - II Ice house. Begun 1788 by Henry Holland, for Francis 5th Duke of Bedford. Externally of coursed ironstone rubble with ashlar dressings, internally of brick. Raised on a slight mound, consists of circular domed structure half buried in ground, with single-storeyed circular ornamental exterior structure. Gothick style. Embattled parapet. 2-stage buttresses. Ornamental blind windows, all pointed-arched single-lights under square heads. Pointed-arched doorway to N with plank door. This gives onto entrance tunnel which originally probably contained 2 airlock doors. This tunnel opens approximately halfway up inner chamber. 2 trapdoors to domed roof, which is covered with tiles, bitumen and earth.
