4/52 Brown Howe farmhouse with adjoining barn and byres
II
Farmhouse, barn, and byres. Probably 3 builds with barn predating house. 1704 date on door lintel re-used internally over former fireplace; R.C.H.M. (1936) records 1673 date on fixed bedstead (now removed). Later alterations and additions, including early C20 wing to rear. House white-washed coursed, squared rubble, barn and byres of snecked rubble; only barn has quoins to both ends, house and byres only have quoins to right-hand ends. 2 storeys, byres lower. 9 bays (3:3:3) overall. House has gabled central porch with plank inner door; single-light window to left and former 2-light window, now Yorkshire sash, to right on each floor, all in stone surrounds. Brick end chimneys. Byres, adjoining to right have 2 part-blocked doors, with inserted windows, to ground floor; stone steps between up to door, now part-blocked with inserted window, with casement to either side. Threshing barn, adjoining to left, has central wagon door. House interior: Chamfered beams; C18 bracketed fireplace to ground floor front, curved stone stair to rear. Buildings adjoining either end not of interest.
