Details
SP 9432-9532 WOBURN LEIGHTON STREET 9/122 The Round House - II Former base of smock windmill, converted 1805-20 to Picturesque cottage for John 6th Duke of Bedford. Formerly known as Windmill Cottage. Coursed ironstone with some repairs in brick, the whole colourwashed. Pyramidal clay tile roof, some fishscale tiles. One storey and attics, octagonal plan. SE elevation has part-glazed door in cambered-headed opening. Some way above this is 3-centred arch with projecting keystone, the brickwork beneath it indicating that the arch was probably open prior to conversion. Other elevations have round-arched recesses with projecting keystones, one blind, others containing casements with glazing bars. SW and NE elevations have semi- circular eyebrown dormers containing casement windows. Central brick chimney stack. Early C20 single storeyed slate roofed addition to NE elevation. Included as an architectural curiosity.
