1/40 Range of pigsties at Higher
- Kernicks

II

Range of pigsties. Circa late C18 or early-mid C19. Granite rubble with slate
lacing in the masonry and granite quoins. Rag slate roof with ridge tiles and gable
ends.
Plan: Rectangular plan range of pigsties, with feeding windows to front, doorways and
pigruns to rear.
Exterior: Single storey, sloping down to left ; the front has 4 windows stepped up to
the right, each with wooden shutters with strap hinges ; each window has a roughly
hewn granite lintel and an internal granite cill, which is angled so that the swill
could be poured in to a trough inside the sty. The left side is blind and the right
side has a ventilation slit at upper level. At the rear, there are four doorways
with roughly hewn granite lintels and doors with strap hinges. The pigrun is
enclosed by a rubble wall about 1½ metres high, with a gateway at each side.
This is an unusually complete example of a purpose built range of pigsties, well
designed for its function and an essential part of a small farm's economy.
