Private house now part of monkey sanctuary. Circa 1856, extended in 1865 (datestone). Built to the design of the patron William Murray. Rendered with slate roofs. Triple gabled front with lower wing on left with gable end. Stair projection to rear with hipped end. Further wing to rear with gabled ends and 1865 wing on right of front elevation with hipped left-hand end and gabled right-hand end with splayed corner. Axial chimney stack at junction with main range and lower left-hand wing. Other moulded chimney stacks and bellcote originally on higher right-hand front gabled end removed in circa 1970s and 1980s. Gothic cottage ornee of irregular plan with 2 reception rooms in main range on front now 1 room. Stair projection and service wing to rear. 2 storeys and attic asymmetrical front elevation to main range with complete original fenestration. Triple gabled front with height and extent of projection of gables increasing from left to right. Verandah above ground floor openings continuing across front and right-hand side elevation. Steeply pitched slate roof supported on arcade of timber posts with 4-centred arches and carved spandrels. Cobbled pavement below. Blocked entrance in ground floor of left-hand gable end. Second and third gables with original glazed doors flanked by narrow lights and complete decorative glazing bars. First floor with unusual fenestration; first gable on left with triple light opening with central raised round arch flanked by 2 rectangular openings. Second gable with original fenestration in 4-centred arched opening and third gable with oriel window with 3-light casement and original honeycombe glazing bars. 3- light rectangular attic window above. 1865 wing on right with C20 fenestration on ground floor and 2 gabled half-dormers above with original 2-light casements containing 4-centred centre-hung lights. Window, later converted into door on first floor in right-hand gable end with ornate original painted glass and margin glazing with datestone above. 3-light stair window in projection on rear of main range with original fenestration. C20 extensions to rear and on left-handside. Interior only 2 reception rooms of main range inspected. Complete decorative moulded cornices, ceiling rose, panelled shutters, metal pelmet and C19 chimney piece. Murrayton, despite the C20 extensions, is a well preserved and good example of Gothic cottage ornee where the original fenestration and other decorative features are especially important on all elevations.
