DEAN EAGLESFIELD NY 12 NW 9/117 Moorland Close and former stables adjoining (previously listed as "Moorland Close Farmhouse G.V. with stable") 3-3-67 II

Farmhouse and stables. Mid C18 with early C20 extension. Roughcast walls under graduated greenslate roof with right kneeler. Former stable with V-jointed quoins and extension of rendered brick. 2 storeys, 2 bays with left single-bay extension under common roof; lower 3-bay right stables and lower single-bay front extension. Right 2 bays of farmhouse have sash windows in C18 stone surrounds, the smaller left ground-floor window within a blocked C18 doorway. Left sash windows in C20 stone surrounds made to match existing surrounds. Doorway behind brick extension has reused lintel inscribed and dated I & AF 1700 (Isaac & Ann Fletcher). Left return wall has C20 doorway with reused lintel dated and inscribed I & AF 1700 and open stone porch with segmental hood, formerly on the front blocked doorway. Former stables have plank door under loft doorway. Further left C20 door, casement and sash windows all in C18 stone surrounds. Extension has plank doors and rear opening to form dairy/porch. front wall has inscription MOORLAND CLOSE BIRTHPLACE OF FLETCHER CHRISTIAN, LEADER OF THE MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY 1789. Bequeathed by the Wyndam family to Queens College Oxford. From a C19 pencil drawing in Carlisle Library, it is clear that the inscriptions came from the now demolished original C17 farmhouse.
