Details
ST COLUMB MAJOR UNION HILL (north side), SW 9063-9163 St Columb Major 17/268 Glencairn - GV II
House. Mid - late C19, with few later alterations. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Slate roofs with crested ridge tiles and gable ends. Lateral stacks with brick shafts. Plan: Double depth plan, with entrance in a projecting bay at the front and three principal rooms facing the garden along the right side. Service rooms to rear left, in a wing enclosing a small courtyard at the left side of the house. Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical front; gable end projecting to left with 2-storey shallow gabled porch tower; 2-centred arched doorway with double half-glazed doors, with Gothic glazing, buttress to right and left. First floor has 2-light plate-glass window with terracotta finial. Deep eaves with similar finial to the main gable above. To right the gable end has external stack and first floor string course. The right side is the garden front, witha gabled bay projecting to right and left and central bay. The gabled bay to left has 2-storey canted bay with hipped roof, plate-glass casements at ground and first floor. The gabled bay to right has similar 3-light window at ground floor and 2-light window at first floor, with a single light to the attic. The centre bay has 2-light window at ground and first floor with first floor string course. At the left side, the entrance to the service courtyard has a pair of square plan ashlar piers, about 2 metres high, with stepped pyramidal caps. The left side of the house has a large gable over the stair hall with large mullion and transom window with 4 margin glazed Gothic lights; single light at ground floor to right and single storey C20 addition to left. 2-storey addition attached to rear left and a 2-storey service wing behind with hipped roof and end stack to left. 2 margin-glazed sashes at ground floor and one at first floor. The end has single storey C19 lean-to. Interior: The front room on the garden front has a marble chimneypiece with consoles, fine C19 cast iron grate with ogee hood and crocketed pinnacles. The stair well is to left of the entrance, open well stair with turned balusters and moulded wreathed handrail. The porch has fielded dado panelling.
