4/306 Barn (formerly house) and adjoining
- piggeries at SW 4503776
GV II
House, later converted to barn, and adjoining piggeries. Circa early C18, remodelled
and extended circa early-mid C19. Granite rubble with granite dressings, some
granite ashlar with snecks. Grouted scantle slate roof with gable ends. Brick
chimney over original granite ashlar stack at right hand gable end.
Plan: original house was probably a 2 room plan with possibly chambers in the
original steep roof space. In the C19 the walls were heightened and a 1-room plan
possibly stable or shippon was added at the left-hand end and the house was converted
to a shippon with granary over and external steps were built at the rear, left.
Single storey C19 piggery adjoins at right-hand end and returns almost at right
angles to the front at far right.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Irregular west front with mostly C19 openings. The C19
extension, left, has doorway and small window to each floor; the former house, right,
has doorway towards right with window over. Various blocked openings at both front
and rear. The principal first floor openings are sited opposite the principal rear
openings for winnowing. The piggery has 2 doorways to each front.
Interior: not inspected.
Part of an unspoiled coastal hamlet set in the ancient field system of this part of
Cornwall.
