7/90 Scales Fold and adjoining byre

II

Farmhouse and adjoining byre. Late C17, altered and extended, dated 1729 over entrance with initials J.B. & A.B. Hammer-dressed red sandstone on projecting footing stones, with large flush quoins; graduated green slate roof with bottom courses of sandstone slates, end brick chimney stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays. C20 glazed door has moulded architrave with inscribed and dated frieze. Flanking enlarged 2-pane sash windows, with similar windows above. C17 small single light window above entrance and ground floor fire window to left. End wall left, shows walls raised and rear extended. Rear wall has 2 early C18 upper floor windows, one filled; other windows are C19 and C20. Interior principal room, has beamed ceiling to ground floor. Stone heck post and partition with fireplace beam; hood filled by false ceiling. Spice cupboard to left has lost its door, but retains its wooden surround. Late C18 byre to right has re-used stone from house with initials R.(&)B.E. and date 1672 (72 is a later addition with earlier date erased). Coursed red sandstone rubble walls, Welsh slate roof of slightly higher level than house. Partly filled round cart arch to left, with small window above. Plank doors to 2 byre entrances, loft doors above, one with external stone steps. Listing excludes other outbuildings and C19 kitchen extension to house.
