CRANTOCK CRANTOCK SW 76 SE 4/53 Penlyn (formerly listed as -The 24.10.51 Hatch and Penlyn, The Square) GV II

House; formerly part of a larger house, the rest now separate, attached to left, The Hatch (q.v.). Circa mid C17, with later alterations, mainly of C19 and C20. Slatestone rubble and cob, painted; the upper level rendered. Thatched roof with gable ends. Gable end stack to right. Plan: This is the passage and lower end room of a 3-room and cross passage house. The entrance leads directly into the passage, with a winder stair inserted at the rear of the passage. One room to right, heated from a gable end stack. One-room plan addition to rear right. Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 2 window front; all windows are 2-light casements. Ground floor has 4-panelled and glazed door to left. Two casements to right of 8- panes each light with cambered arches. First floor has 2 similar 6-pane casements, all with L hinges, of C19. Right side has 2 small round windows at first floor. The rear wing to right has C20 casement at ground floor and C20 2-light casement at first floor. Single storey thatched addition at the right end. At the rear there are 2 large C20 gabled dormers with casements and C20 French windows and door. Interior: The passage has a moulded wooden wall-plate to left; moulded dado rail and blocked door, formerly leading into the hall, now part of The Hatch (q.v.). Winder stair to rear of the passage. The room to right has 2 roughly hewn beams. Gable end fireplace with cloam oven and salt holes; C19 mantel. At first floor, the roof is inaccessible; 2 small rooms partitioned. The house was probably divided circa early C19.
