House. Late C17 with Cl8 alterations. Incised stucco walls with raised quoins and chamfered plinth; C20 tile roof, raised copes gables and kneelers, stucco chimney stacks. 3 storeys, 3 bays. Entrance has chamfered surround and C19 door. Ground floor and first floor 2-pane sashes have C19 plain stone surrounds. Second floor 2-pane casements have chamfered surrounds and remains of central mullions, with filled windows between. Width increased by extension to rear, with late C18 round- headed staircase window with radial glazing bars in head. Home of the Forster family of violin makers, later of London. See, Transactions Cumberland & Westmorland, A&A, Soc., lxxiii, p.310. Compare style with that of Bonnie Prince Charlie's house, Brampton and Bleatarn Park, Irthington Parish.
