Details

ALVANLEY C.P. YARRANGALL GREEN SJ 57 SW 5/24 Austerson Old Hall. II Hall (dismantled and removed from Austerson, Crewe and Nantwich Borough, and re-erected at Alvanley 1980 s) probably mid C16. Oak small framing with rendered panels; brown brick; clay tile roof not completed at time of inspection (1984). 3-storey 1-room cross-wing; long wing of 2 storeys plus attic with 2 rooms to lower storey. The cross-wing is of oak small-framing with closely spaced studs and 1 rail to each storey, on flush plinth partly of old brick, partly tooled sandstone. Jetties at 1st and 2nd floors with replaced ovolo bressumers; 4 old carved bressumer brackets. Long wing has brick cavity walls to lower storey with narrow-panel small framing above. Ridge chimney at junction of wings; lateral chimney on long wing, both of brick. South east doorway in middle of long wing; north west doorway by junction with cross wing. 2 oak-mullioned leaded casements to each main storey in long face of cross-wing and 1 replaced window to each storey in each gable end; 2 windows to each main storey and gabled dormer to attic in north west side of long wing; to each main storey and 1 to attic in end gable; 1 to lower storey and 3 to upper storey in south east side. Interior: Cross-wing has 2 ogee-stopped ovolo beams to each storey and queenpost central truss carrying purlins with scarf joints locked over principal rafters; brought-in sandstone fireplaces. The long wing, the lower storey of brick, was of almost wholly reused oak timbers in upper storey, attic and roof. The oak joists dovetailed into the assorted ovolo and slightly hollow-chamfered beams. An inglenook in the, lower storey with altered ovolo-fronted tapered bressumer. The internal structure indicate the cross-wing as Elizabethan and the long wing a C17 addition using reused timbers. The original entrance to Elizabethan portion is from present lobby. The reconstruction has been carefully executed using original timbers, old brick and tile wherever possible.
