II
Formerly hall, then farmhouse, now divided into 2 houses: Early C17 core, addition to rear -and raising of roof mid C18 for Richard Broster, further major addition c1870 for Ascoli family, who remodelled the whole house. Coursed squared, buff sandstone rubble, Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge and 3 stone chimneys on the original rectangular range. 2 storeys over barrel vaulted cellar. In 3-bay front all windows C19 4-light chamfered stone mullions, 2 have C17 rubble hood moulds and 2 hood moulds survive in isolation. Both gables have 2-light windows under rubble hood moulds. Remainder of the house in Jacobean style with stone-coped gables and a mixture of mullioned and transomed, and mullioned windows. Interior of western half: Essentially C1870. Cellar contains large slab reading "This must stand here forever, Richard Broster 1757". Interior of eastern half: Room in right end bay has a massive inglenook fire place with chamfered jambs and fire beam. Blocked gable entry beside it. 2 chamfered ceiling beams with flat stops. Room has C18 wooden panelling brought from elsewhere. Room to rear has Adam-style fireplace from Tadcaster Hall.
