Hall house, now public house and restaurant. Late C15, altered C18, C19 and late C20. Timber
frame encased in painted brick, old tile gabled roof. U-plan; former hall of 2 or 3 framed bays
with crosswing of 3 framed bays on west and a 4 framed bay crosswing on east which was formerly
jettied on south and east. 2 storeys and 2 storeys with attic. Tall chimney with clay pots on
left. Entrance (south) front: 2 gabled crosswings projecting in front of centre section. Left
hand gable of 2 bays. String at first floor level. 2-light leaded casement windows on each floor
with segmental heads; attic floor window blocked. Plank entrance door between 2 brick buttresses.
Right hand gable of one bay. String at first floor level. Sash windows with glazing bars, that on
the ground floor with panelled shutters and blocked opening on each side. Centre section: 2 sash
windows with glazing bars on first floor; similar on ground floor and with panelled shutters. C19
4-panel entrance door on right with top panels glazed. Return front on Church Lane: irregular.
Black painted plinth, plat band at first floor. Two, 2-light leaded casement windows on first
floor, one sash window with glazing bars on left. 4-panel with plain pedimented wooden rood on
right of window and two 2-light leaded casement windows with plank shutters on right of door.
Interior: timber frame visible on first floor of good quality and large sections. Redundant crown
post roof with clasped side purlins and large curved arch and windbraces. Hinds Head Hotel
occupies a prominent corner site in the centre of the village. The C20 flat roof extension
adjoining on the left is of no special interest.
