Details
ST 7382 SODBURY PORTWAY LANE 3/128 10.5.76 Parks Farmhouse II
Probably C15 origins but much altered by the end of the C17. Recently restored. Rubble. Double Roman tiled roof. Two storeys and attics. Random modern casement windows. L plan: The oldest part of the house is the mediaeval gabled cross wing at the east end of the main east-west range; the room to the west is a C17 extension; the north-east wing is also probably C17.
Rear elevation: large gable of cross wing; later gabled porch; hipped roof to north-east wing and large stack with off-sets.
Interior: Remains of timber-framed structure include a jowled and chamfered post and chamfered ties on the first floor. Windbracing in attic/roof space.
R.C.H.M. suggest ground floor ceiling is later re-use of C16 joists which are heavily chamfered with run-out stops.
Door to north-east wing, on upper floor, has ovolo moulding with stops and adjoining room has C17 stop-chamfered beam.
Central internal stack with simple ashlar fireplace on first floor by modern stairs.
The farmhouse lies in the centre of a mediaeval deer park.
