SJ 55 SW CHOLMONDELEY C.P. CHOLMONDELEY PARK
1/19 Somerset Lodge
GV II
Inner park gatehouse, on the east approach to the Castle, early C19, probably for the first Marquis of Cholmondeley. Hammer-dressed sandstone with lead roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays. Large carriageway opening bay, slightly set forward, with full height multi-panelled openwork gates. The opening is flanked by sashes with "Y" tracery glazing bars in lancet openings and smaller lancet casements to ground floor only. The carriage arch is surmounted by a shield bearing arms and crown. The outer bays have moulded cornice and crenellated parapet and the centre bay has its parapet supported on a corbel table to simulate a tower. The east and west faces of the gatehouse are similar. Gable end stacks. The gatehouse is flanked by crenellated wing walls which hide single storey brick and stone outbuildings. Within the arch is a plastered quadripartite vaulted ceiling and Tudor-headed doors, north and south, with lock rail and five vertical panels above and below.
