Details

FINCHAMPSTEAD NEW MILL ROAD SU 76 SE (South east side) 12/21 New Mill II Water mill and millhouse, now a restaurant. C15 with C17, C19 and late C20 alterations and extensions. Part timber framed with painted brick infill, part painted brick; old tile gabled roof, the mill half-hipped. Irregular plan. Part 2 storeys, part one and a half storeys. Large chimney stack at east end of house. North front:- house on left hand the upper part part timber framed and C17; a chimney on the left hand of the gable end with a C20 door on the left of the chimney in a lean-to porch;over this a 2-light casement window, a small window in the timber framed part and a 3-light leaded casement on the ground floor. West front of mill building:- 2 gabled dormers with C20 casement windows on the left of centre, a boarded door to the right of centre and a C20 3-light casement on each side of the door. The right hand part of this section is built over the mill stream which runs through 2' brick arches. To the right of this adjoining, and on the further bank of the mill stream is a higher section of painted weather boarding with a half-hipped old tile roof. Adjoining, further to the right is a C20 L-plan single storey dining room extension of no special interest. Interior:- many members of the timber frame exposed, a large inglenook fireplace, and the mill wheel, gears and machinery fully restored and in working order enclosed behind a glass screen.
