II
Lesser gentry house, now farmhouse. C17 or earlier, altered by early
addition of front wing, and in C18. Coursed sandstone rubble with quoins,
stone slate roof. Rectangular 3 unit plan, with a short wing at junction of
2nd and 3rd, a porch at the right-hand gable, and turret at rear left-hand
corner. Two storeys and attic; continuous dripcourse; mullioned and
transomed windows on both floors: 14, 16 and 14 lights at ground floor, the
first 2 each with 4 blocked lights, and the centre window divided centrally
by a king mullion; and 10, 12, and 10 lights at 1st floor, plus a former
window to the right of the added wing and partly blocked by it; this wing
(perhaps formerly a porch) is of 2 slightly lower storeys, with dripmould
carried round, a segmental-headed tripartite window at ground floor (with
stop-chamfered jambs), and a 4-light mullioned window above. Between the
1st and 2nd windows at ground floor is an inserted doorway with pedimented
architrave and rectangular overlight with intersecting tracery. At the
right-hand gable, and set back slightly, is a short extension of 2 lower
storeys, with a Tudor-arched chamfered doorway in the gable wall,and a
2-light window on each floor to the front, incorporating a large chimney
stack which is otherwise external. The left gable wall has a 14-light
transomed window at ground floor (outer lights blocked), an inserted casement
at 1st floor, and a 3-light attic window with hoodmould; the turret at the
at the rear corner has a blocked doorway on the west side, a 2-light window
above, and a similar window in the rear (blocked). The rear has inter alia a
large chimney flush with the rear wall.
Interior: in the 3rd unit, a very large stone arched fireplace (blocked);
massive beams on the inner side of the long walls (suggesting former
timber-framed construction), and moulded beams especially in the centre unit;
arch-braced roof trusses; otherwise, altered, and partition walls inserted.
