II

Former rectory to Church of St. James, Chapelthorpe (q.v.), now house. Mid C18 rear kitchen wing with early C19 house attached at right angles. Punch-dressed stone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys with cellar. T-shaped 3-bay symmetrical facade. Plinth. Doorway has architrave, approached by short flight of steps. 16-pane sash windows in raised plain surrounds. Ashlar gable stacks. Rear has earlier gabled wing with quoined angles, altered window and large window above in plain stone surrounds. Lateral stack to left; outshut to right with inserted doorway. Above outshut, on main house, is stairwindow with 2-paned fixed light. Right-hand return has window at low level (lights one of the cellars) the lintel inscribed "DAIRY".

Interior: front door opens into stair-hall with 2-turn staircase with stick balusters, slender turned newels and swept handrail. Plastered hall ceiling with oval decorative feature; 6-panels doors in architraves. Front dining-room has tall corner cupboard with arched doors with raised-and-fielded panels; dentil cornice, curved serving hatch to rear with curved sliding door; panelled window surround with shutters. Parlour has similar window surround. Curved stone steps lead down to 2 barrel-vaulted cellars.
