3/48 Watergate near to 22.11.66 Iron Bridge on Island at Walton Hall (formerly listed with iron bridge at Walton Hall)

GV II

Water gate. Said to be medieval. Roughly-dressed well-coursed masonry largely overgrown by ivy. Central segmental archway with inner recess for doors leads to flight of 7 stone steps. Flanking central turrets from one of which it is said Oliver Cromwell fired the first swivel-cannon gun in England. The whole is surmounted by large carved wooden crucifix. Scheduled Ancient Monument.
