ACKWORTH PONTEFRACT ROAD SE41NW (east side) 2/8 "Plague stone" at - junction with Sandy Gate Lane - II
Structure known locally as "Plague Stone", but perhaps formerly a cross base. Probably late medieval. Sandstone. Two roughtly-hewn slabs approx. 1 metre wide, one mounted on top of the other; in the centre of the upper slab, a square socket for a former cross shaft. ("Plaque stones" were receptacles for sterilising coins in vineagar, normally at or close to parish boundaries).
