PONTEFRACT MARKET PLACE SE 4521 NE (north-west side) 8/43 No 8 (formerly listed as 'No 8 3.3.75 (The Tankard Public House)') GV II

House, now public house. Probably late C18 with later alterations. Red brick in Flemish bond, partly painted, with painted stucco dressings and slate roof. Three storeys, 4 bays with central entrance. Ground floor is recessed and painted and has central semi-circular-headed doorcase with bolection-moulded architrave, 6-panel door and leaded fanlight. To either side there are bow windows on brick plinths with 3 18-pane sashes to each, brick sills and wooden cornices. In front of the doorcase are 2 C20 wooden columns supporting modern fascia with original stone cornice below centre point and moulded sill band to first-floor windows at top. First and second floors have rusticated stucco quoins. First floor has 4 tall sash windows with glazing bars in elaborate pedimented surrounds with eared and shouldered architraves set over raised quoined jambs, corniced keystones to architraves and plain friezes to pediments. Moulded second-floor sill band and 4 unequally-hung 9-pane sashes in similar surrounds, but with plain architraves and without pediments. Eaves band. Stone coped gable to left. C19 brick end stacks.
