G.V. II
Barn. Early C17. Probably contemporary with Kirby Grange Hall (q.v.), c 1606 for Sir Richard Asheton of Middleton. Thin coursed hammer-dressed stone, quoins, stone slate roof. 4 bay interior with single aisle on north side (side farthest away from house). Door entries confined to gable ends. Gable fronted, parallel to house: east gable has quoins to left angle only, right angle curved walling and probably rebuilt; to left mistal doorway (blocked) has timber lintel and tie-stone jambs; to right, wide double doorway across aisle-arcade )probably later enlargement); above, hayloft doorway with triangular breather holes one-over- two set in apex of gable, with below, two rows of double ventilators. Left hand return (south elevation) has two rows of 5 triangular ventilators and inserted window. Attached brick building to south west end not of special interest. West gable partly coped, has similar fenestration to east gable. Right hand return: long sloping roof to low eaves, window cut in to left of larger blocked opening with timber lintel. Interior: fine oak timbered interior. Three queen strut trusses with slender struts to the principal rafters which support single trenched butt purlins and diamond set ridge tree. Posts on padstones have chamfered edges and straight braces to tie-beam and arcade-plate. Aisle-tie sits on top of wall plate, single strut to principal rafter which supports purlin. Retains original oak rafters in one piece from ridge to arcade-plate, with separate offset rafters from arcade to wall plate.
