Farmhouse. Dated 1606 but much rebuilt, probably in CL9. Coursed squared stone,
stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays with through-passage, right bay projecting
forward under continuation of main roof. Double-chamfered mullion windows to ground
floor of 2nd and 3rd bays, otherwise single-chamfered mullion windows. From left: bay
1: on right, stop-chamfered quoined doorway with dated lintel in gabled porch having
moulded doorway and, to gable,pigeon-holes with ledges, kneelers, coping and cross
finial; to its left are windows of 2 lights (mullion removed) and 3 lights; on lst
floor two 2-light windows linked by inserted 2-light window. Bay 2: windows of
3 lights and 6 lights with king mullion, linked by inserted window and all under
continuous hoodmould; on lst floor a C19 window to left of a 5-light window. Bay 3: a
6-light window with king mullion and broken hoodmould with C19 doorway; small square
chamfered lst-floor light in left return. Kneelers and ashlar coping; finial to right
gable. Corniced stack to left end; ridge stacks between bays 1 and 2 and bays 2 and
3. Rear, from left: a 3-light window, 2 lights made into doorway, with 2-light window
above; later single-storey outshut; a 2-light window to each floor (mullions removed);
a c.1980 gabled open porch masking stop-chamfered quoined doorway; two 2-light
windows, left one made into doorway and now window. Right return: a small square
light on left and a 3-light, now 2-light window to ground floor; similar window above
to centre. Left return: a 4-light double-chamfered mullion window to lst floor left.
Interior: through-passage has walls of large stone blocks, the right hand wall with
chamfered ledge at top (as at High Lee, Sowerby Lane (q.v.)). The central housebody
has spliced stop-chamfered spine-beams indicating presence of a former bressumer and
firehood, and a later, probably C17, stone fireplace with massive corbelled lintel and
moulded cornice.
