SOWERBY BRIDGE THORNEY LANE SE 02 NW (west side, off), Midgley 1/252 Acre - - II 'SC Laithehouse. c1800; date inscription 1837' probably refers to barn conversion. Coursed squares tone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 2-bay house to right of 2-bay barn; outshut added to rear of right bay. House: central board door, the doorway tied into flanking 4-light flat-faced mullion widows by large impost blocks; 2 similar windows above; tooled stone surrounds to all openings. Barn, converted to cottage: keyed segmental-arched cart-entry on right, blocked and with later 3-light window and keystone dated; chamfered mistal doorway to left end; two 2-light windows above, that to left later, the later windows having plain stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions, the earlier window as house windows. Gables have kneelers and ashlar coping. Ridge stacks to right ends of house and barn. Rear: house has one 3-light first-floor window; barn has part-blocked opposing mistal doorway. left return: diamond owl-hole in gable. Interior: house: pantry in outhsut is partly below ground level; barn: large fireplace with chamfered mantleshelf to right; fireplace above it with iron grate; angle braces to roof trusses, through purlins. In state of dereliction at time of resurvey.
