5/91 Hill End Farmhouse 9.8.66 II

House, unoccupied. Mid-late C17 with early-mid C18 addition to right. Large well-coursed gritstone to front, hammer=dressed to rear, stone slate roofs. 2 storeys. Earliest house probably of 2-cells with gable-entry originally with added stair-hall and large parlour in C18; double-depth throughout. The fenestration, other than 2 inserted C19 cottage doorways into the window of the 1st cell and the 2nd cell, remains intact. All are double-chamfered mullioned windows with continuous hoodmould over ground floor windows of 1st 2 cells. 1st cell has 6-light window, doorway with monolithic jambs taken out of 2 lights, with 4-light window above. 2nd cell has inserted doorway with tie-stone jambs to left of 6-light housebody window, 2-light fire-window; two 3-light windows to lst-floor. Coped gable to left with ridge stack. C18 addition taller and has 9-light window with 2 king mullions to each floor. Over ground-floor window is dripmould interrupted by slightly later Classical doorcase at junction of the 2 builds: it has pilasters, entablature with triglyphs and a segmental pediment. Above is a large sash window with raised architrave and sill on consoles. Gable stacks.

Rear: L-shaped with projecting bay to left; this has quoins, 6-light window with king mullion to each floor and doorway to right with composite jambs and Tudor-arched lintel. Set back is tall stairwindow with arched lintel, keystone and impost-blocks. Earlier house has 2 bays of windows: 6-light with 4-light above and 5-light with 4-light above. Set between is projecting gabled cellar partly submerged into hillside; above is arched light with sunken spandrels. Lateral stack at junction of the 2 builds.

Interior: Housebody has stop-chamfered joists with scarf-joints, evidence of former bressumer. Number of service rooms to rear. C18 addition has entrance hall with simple plaster ceiling with a moulded cornice and elliptical raised moulding. The former external door (into housebody) has an added moulded surround to match the other doors. The new parlour has stop-chamfered beams and joists. The main stair lies behind the entrance hall: C19 open-well probably replacing an earlier one in this position for it rises to a landing out of which open doors with stone surrounds, chamfered and arched. Beneath the stair are steps down to a vaulted cellar.

A fine example of a prosperous Yeoman's house with its C18 classical details.
