House. Late C18,altered C19. Deeply-coursed sandstone, facsimile stone slate roof. 2 storeys. Two 1st-floor windows with wing to rear. Large quoins. Front wall extensively rebuilt. Central part- glazed door flanked by 4-pane sashes with projecting sills all with lintels tooled as voussoirs. Inscribed plaque over door within stone architrave. Flanking windows as ground floor but with flat arches. Renewed brick end stacks. Inscription on plaque includes the words:
IN MEMORIAM
W. JOHN WENTWORTH FITZWILLIAM
BORN AUG 7 1852
DIED SEPT 11 1889
THIS BOYS HOME WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE GORDON BOYS HOME 1900
This son of the 6th Earl was tragically killed in a riding accident at Wentworth Woodhouse. The building served as a memorial to him and provided a home for boys taken into Fitzwilliam guardianship in the late C19.
Attached outbuilding to left not of special interest.
