PENISTONE TOWNGATE SE20SN (north side) Thurlstone 3/76 Nos 26 and 28 19th April 1982 (formerly listed as 26 and 28 Towngate and No 1 Royd Moor Road)
II
Two houses. C17 with C19 alterations and C20 restoration. Coursed squared stone. Stone slate roof (part bitumen covered). Two storeys 7-cell plan with cross wing to left which projects at rear. 0uoins. The left gabled wing has a restored 5-light double-chamfered window to ground floor with hoodmould and a similar 4-light window to 1st floor. Arched single light in apex. Hollow-chamfered gable copings on moulded kneelers and shaped finials. The centre bay has flat-faced mullion windows: 4-light to ground floor and 10-light to 1st floor. The right bay also has C19 windows. Three ashlar stacks. Rear: arched entrance to centre bay, The cross wing has double-chamfered windows; a 3-light and a blocked and altered cross-window to ground floor, a 3-light to 1st floor, and a cross-window to gable apex.
Interior: large arched fireplace in cross wing with adjoining opening presumably altered. Chamfered fireplace in room above.
