Small country house now school. c1750 for Sir Francis Tofield; C19 additions and alterations. Roughcast, stone slate roof. Double-pile, 3-storey centre with later L-shaped, 2-storey wing at east end and extended range of 2-storey additions at west end. Garden front: 7 bays; central doorway has part-glazed door in swept-shouldered architrave and pulvinated frieze beneath consoled pediment; flanking sashes with glazing.bars have projecting sills and ashlar surrounds. Canted, 1-storey bay window on left has scrolled architraves to unequally-hung 15-pane sashes and pierced balustrade. Bays 6 and 7 have unequally-hung 15-pane sashes. 1st floor: C20 casements with glazing bars in ashlar surrounds, those to bays 6 and 7 have lower sills. 2nd floor: centre-pivoted, 6-pane casements. Modillioned wooden cornice to hipped roof with tall corniced stacks at each end and shorter ridge stack on left. Later wing on right: 2 bays; tall sashes with glazing bars in canted bay as before; 1st-floor windows with ashlar surrounds, that on left a 9-pane sash, that on right altered; shaped end gable with finials. Wing on left: 3 bays; 15-pane sashes to matching canted- bay window on left of tripartite sash; C20 casements in tall ashiar surrounds to 1st floor; tall end stack on left. Entrance front: 6-bay centre with 1-storey canted porch addition having glazed door in archivolted surround with moulded imposts and keystone; sides, originally open and balustraded, have C20 casements beneath archivolts; cornice rises as pediment over door. Other bays similar to garden front. 1-bay wing on left has shaped gable with finials. 3-baby wing set forward on right has shaped end gables with corniced stacks. Right return (of garden front): French window with decorative glazing bars in scrolled architrave; oriel bay window with dentilled cornice. Interior. bay-4 doorway within porch has old panelled door in stone architrave. Later balustraded staircase, modillioned cornice to the stair- well. Staff room in east wing has marble fireplace with iron firebasket; egg and dart cornice beneath coved ceiling.
