Details
THORNTON WATLASS - SE 28 NW 3/105 Church of St Mary 22.8.66 - II Church. C15 and mid-late C19, later work probably by G Fowler Jones. West tower; nave, with south porch, north aisle and transepts; chancel. Rubblestone, ashlar, limestone and sandstone with Welsh slate roof. Tower: C15 Perpendicular style. 4 stages. Offset clasping buttresses with stair tower in that to south-east having chamfered lights. 2nd stage has trefoil- headed 1-light window. 3rd stage has 1-light pointed-arched window, belfry has 3 1-light trefoil-headed windows set in a double-chamfered surround with flat lintel above each light, corbelled cornice with embattled parapet, pinnacles to each corner. Rest of church C19 in the Geometrical style with pointed-arch windows. Nave: 2 2-light windows with hoodmoulds. South porch: board double-door in pointed-arch surround; angle buttresses. Transepts: 3-light window with hoodmould. Chancel: 3 1-light cusped windows. Diagonal buttresses to east end. Stone coping and crosses to gables. East window: 3-light windows, central one taller, all with trefoil tracery with circles in heads of arches and hoodmoulds. Interior: tower has a quadripartite rib-vault, with sunk quadrant moulding.
