Thornton Stud with flanking walls, gate,
railings and end piers

Gateway, flanking walls, railings and end piers. Late C18. Ashlar,
wrought ironwork. Tall central archway flanked by short walls with curved
railings to front. Central archway has semicircular-headed carriage
entrance with moulded archivolt and impost band flanked by paired Tuscan
columns with reeded capitals. The entablature breaks forward over the
columns and the frieze has swags and oval paterae. In the centre is a
panel with 3 swags. Above,a cornice and blocking course. The arch is
filled by good fan of wrought ironwork, underneath 2 gates have decorative
wrought ironwork with oval motifs to base. Arch flanked by short walls,
impost band level in height. To each side a plain iron railing,with
standards topped by urns at regular intervals, terminated by a rusticated
pier with plinth, frieze with swags and urns, cornice and stepped blocking
course. Formerly the western entrance to Thornton Hall, which is
demolished.
